General Construction Overview

It’s not rocket science construction. Use normal woodworking techniques with the correct materials & all will work as it should.

1) Humidors are kept at 65-75% Rh. Use a vapor barrier under greenboard in new construction or over sheetrock, if the latter is already installed.

2) Use 4x8x ¼” thick sheets of Spanish cedar veneer or mahogany veneer to cover walls & ceiling. Spanish cedar sheets can be difficult at times to acquire vs mahogany which any good hardwoods supplier will stock. Spanish cedar is in the same family as mahogany & both are visually quite similar.

Both are veneer-neither will have the Spanish cedar aroma. Solid Spanish cedar shelves & molding will provide the aroma desired.

3) Use true solid Spanish cedar for the shelving, moldings, seam covers, etc. This will contain the resin that gives off the typical Spanish cedar aroma on finds in a humidor.

4) DO NOT use American red cedar. Your cigars will end up tasting like a gerbil cage. 1) Use a hard surface floor ie tile, hardwoods, etc. Avoid carpet as it absorbs odors.

5) Use a quality humidification system with a control designed for accuracy in the 65-75% range. Most off the shelf humidifiers are designed for home use in the 50% range & their native controls are plus or minus 5-10% which is not accurate enough for quality cigar storage.

Better systems may use an off the shelf humidifier or a humidifier designed for commercial use combined with a more accurate control added to provide the narrow humidity range needed for long term storage. Ultrasonic high output humidifiers are a good choice for mid to large commercial walkins.

6) LED Lights typically generate less heat than incandescent bulbs.

7) Electrical requirements-Standard 15-20 amp circuits are adequate to power most humidification systems. It is a good idea to located a duplex outlet close to the location for the humidifier & another outlet close to the location for the digital control.

Pricing is average retail at date of publication. This may vary by location & market fluctuation in commodity prices for lumber, steel, etc. Mahogany 4x8 sheets can usually be obtained locally at a hardwoods/sheetgoods supplier. Motor freight shipping cost for a few sheets of material is not always cost effective. Shelving, molding, etc if kept 8 ft & shorter can often ship UPS or Fedex Ground avoiding motor freight charges.
